My Detoxifying Challenge - January's Mindful Consumption

During January 2025, I finished several categories of products. Below is a list of products I finished and the alternatives I switched to.

1 Shampoo/Conditioner - I had multiple types of shampoo and conditioner from Suave and Pantene to Olaplex and Biolage. I finished the rest of these half-empty bottles (most of which were labeled poor by Yuka) and switched to Native shampoo and conditioner. Yuka labels their shampoo good and their conditioner excellent. These shampoos and conditioners are easy to find at stores like Walmart, Target, and Amazon. They also won't break the bank, usually costing around $10-$12 each and come in huge bottles.

2 Deodorant - I have used the same scent of Degree antiperspirant for years. Yuka labeled the deodorant I was using as bad! So I made the switch to Hello brand, which offers scents like sweet coconut, clean and fresh, sparkling peach, and many more. They are also labeled excellent through Yuka. The Hello brand is easily found at Walmart, Target, or Amazon and costs about $5-$7 each.

3 Tinted Moisturizer - I don't wear a lot of makeup daily, but the first thing I ran out of was my tinted moisturizer. I was using Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Aging Perfector, which Yuka labels bad. Yuka suggested Andalou Naturals Color + Correct SPF 30, labeled excellent. I love this switch! It's light and breathable with a smooth finish, has sunscreen, and smells like roses. I buy it through Amazon for about $12.

4 Hair Detangler Spray - My hair is naturally curly and gets tangled easily after I wash it. I was using the Suave Kids detangled labeled poor through Yuka. I have switched to a detangled from Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Kids Extra Moisturizing Detangled labeled excellent on Yuka. It works the same and smells wonderful, but isn't full of all the horrible toxins. I've been buying this through Amazon, but recently found it at Target for $10.

5 Hair Heat Protectant - I use a lot of heat on my hair, so I also need a good heat protectant. Previously, I was using Not Your Mother's Beat the Heat Thermal Shield Spray, labeled poor by Yuka. I am now using Mane Magic 10-in-1 Primer, labeled excellent. Another great-smelling product!

6 Sunscreen - This was an important but hard switch for me. I LOVE the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Moisturizing Sunscreen, but Yuka labeled it bad. So I knew I had to switch. I am now using ThinkSport Sunscreen SPF 50 which is labeled excellent by Yuka. I will say sunscreen is expensive and even more so when you buy good ingredients. I buy this one from Amazon for about $17.

7 Face Wash - Another hard switch was my face wash just because I have been using Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser for years. Yuka labeled it as bad, so I started looking for a switch. I now use La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, which is labeled excellent. I am glad I made this switch because it has made my skin feel smoother and more hydrated than ever before. It is easy to find at stores like Walmart, CVS, and even Amazon for $18-$20.

8 Toothpaste - I also switched out my toothpaste from Crest 3D White, which is labeled poor, to Hello, which is labeled excellent. I'm not 100% on this switch, and I want to talk to my dentist to make sure my teeth are still doing well with this toothpaste, but all in all, it seems to work just as well. This is also an easy product to find at Walmart for about $5.

Monthly takeaways:

  • Switching these 8 products wasn't overwhelming because I did it gradually over the month.

  • It didn't significantly impact my budget either.

  • I saved money by focusing on using the products I already had.

  • These were the only new health and beauty products I bought this month.

  • All the products I switched to have been excellent quality, and i don't miss the ones I replaced.

If you're on this journey, I'd love to hear about your experience. What non-toxic products have you discovered to replaced your everyday items?
